Mighty Duck 'complete'

I'm alex baker, and I just 'finished' my duck, the Mighty Duck. I say finished in quotations because still need to paint a few parts, and still havent actually sailed it yet to see if it works, as it's still too cold.
I never built a boat before, and know nothing about sailing, so hopefully it works ok.
A few questions for anyone who knows what they're doing; how am I supposed to know how long the side daggerboard should be, and also; how much does the sail shape matter?
I tried to research the sail making on this website, but didn't see much. From what I did see, I got pretty confused by the math involved, so ended up just cutting a tarp into the general triangle-esque shape I saw. Would this work OK?
