PDRacer World Championship
There are two official world championships. One is the the "World Championship" which is on a 3 year rotating schedule to determine who hosts the following year's race. For info about winning the rights to host this race, see the bottom of this page. The second is the "SDDP World Championship", which means Same Day Different Place, where anyone across the world can compete in their local waters on the same 3 day time window. For more info, see the bottom of this page.
Regional Championships & Annual Races
Any puddle ducker is welcome to organize and host open invitational annual races / championships, such as a championship of your state, province, your country etc. We don't really have our own calendar, but the best public calendar of all messabout & home built boat events is at DuckWorksMagazine.com.
2010 World Championship
Jane Turnell and Gordon Seiter hosted a race on 9-13-09 at Sunoka Beach in Summerland B.C., 7 boats participated. This was the largest race in the qualifying time period, and they have acquried the rights to host the 2010 World Championship Race. Details to be announced.
2009 World Championship
Tim Cleary hosted the race on October 10, 2009 at Allatoona Lake near Atlanta, GA. 13 puddle ducks attended making it the largest puddle duck race to that date. 3 conventional round the buoy races were run to compose the championship, plus later an extra pirate poker race for fun, and on Sunday an improvised sail race for fun.
Shawn Payment won the buoy races with the best point score, becoming our new world champion and 2008 champion Andrew Linn has already begun forwarding all new requests for interviews and charitable donations to Shawn. In the event that Shawn is unable to fulfill his duties as World Champion, 1st runner up Marc Blazer stands ready to assume the title. However, since the class rules identify NO behaviors as TOO outrageous to require defrocking of a reigning champion, (including, for example, the appearance of compromising photos on the internet and/or class action sexual harrassment lawsuits alleging flagrant "buoy slapping") there is little fear of Shawn being forced to relinquish his title.

2008 Pan-Galactic, Inter-Dimensional, PDR World Championship
Was raced on August 23 and 24, 2008 at the Toledo Wooden Boat Show. 9 boats participated, there was a ramming, some last minute improvising, visitors from far and wide including from another country. For the full story, see the web essay about the event.
Andrew Linn won the championship and is quoted:
"As the Pan-Galactic, Inter-dimensional, World Champion of Puddle Duck Racing, I promise to to uphold our values in both public and private life, and to rule our group with an iron fist."
Thats Andrew on the far left of the picture, holding the largest trophy awarded at any Puddle Duck race.
SDDP Race
This was the first year of our official SDDP race, and Tim Cleary won with a 5.25 mile run with an average speed of 3.6 mph. Reporting at the discussion group starting [here]

2007 World Championship
The Okanagan Fleet of Puddle Duck racers played host to the 2007 Puddle Duck World Championships over the weekend at Peach Orchard Park in Summerland. Fleet Captain Gordon Seiter in Hull #58, Goliath took first Overall. The Team of Christine Caumartin and Ted Morrison sailed Boat # 146, Martin Cleaners BCQT to second overall. Rick Landreville out of Chilliwack finished third in Hull #136, Monstrosity. Rick also won the prize for coming the furthest distance to attend, and enjoyed the room donated by The Rosedale Motel.
In total seven boats took part in the two day event. Honorable mention goes to the Smith Family of Faulder who entered two boats and saw their newest, Hull #114 Lincoln Imp, crewed by Gary and Mathew win Sunday's Tail Chase Race. Race Organizer Jane Turnell admits Mandy and Racheal were somewhat handicapped racing Hull #92 Sink-A- Moose constructed by Summerland Mayor David Gregory during last years Centennial Puddle Duck Hatch.

Winning The Rights to Host The World Championship
Race Location & Race Host
The World Championship Race location shall be rotated in a 3 year cycle.
- Every third year, Shorty will host the race
- The next race can't be hosted by an organizer if they hosted in the previous 2 years
- The next race can't be within 650 miles of either previous 2 years locations
Rules for winning the rights,
to host future world championships
To get the rights for the next one, a Race Organizer (RO) has to hold a race & submit their bid within 60 days before or after the current World Championship. The RO with the largest number of PDRacers on the starting line in that time period, gets the rights and can then pick the date and location for the next calendar year WC race.
1 - The boats involved in the race must be setup in class legal configuration (meaning they are 3D), however they do not have to have hull numbers, or be configured in any other way besides class legal 3D.
2 - The starting line of the race has to be on the water, the hulls must be floating, and each boat must have a skipper in it. (I am gonna need a picture of that)
3 - The RO is the person who is in charge of the race (determined location, promoted it, administered it). If you have a dispute within your fleet organization who that is, that is up to you guys to decide.
4 - The RO does not have to have any other qualifications other than they organized the race which happed in the time window.
5 - The people who participate in the race do not have to belong to the RO's fleet or have any other affiliation, it is just a matter of how many class legal hulls showed up on the start line.
6 - 51% of the racers at that race, must have not participated in the previous 2 world championships (this is to prevent the same fleet from electing a new organizer, and getting the rights for the next year)
7 - If 2 races had the same number of hulls, then the race that happened first (local time) gets the rights. (so record the exact time of day you got everyone out to the starting line)
Guidelines For Hosting The World Championship Race
1 - Above all, everyone understands that the world championship race(s) is a fun race, the big rule is to do whatever is needed so people don't get hurt, and not to take it too seriously because that will make it less fun. 2 - If you host a world championship, the championship race itself needs to be free to enter for anyone with a class legal hull, and their crew. We understand that some boating events may incur a fee, I am sure you can figure something out like donations, sponsors or whatever, so that if a participant expresses they can't or don't want to pay an admission fee, they can still participate in the race.
3 - The race organizer may organize whatever type of race(s) they want for the championship. It could be as simple as a single race lasting only a few minutes, or a long grueling endurance contest, multi stage races or whatever. All of the racing that constitutes the world championship needs to be completed in a single 12 hour time window.
4 - The rules for the championship race(s) need to be simple and clear, and published ahead of time. Puddle duckers love to find loopholes and bend the rules as much as they can, so the race organizer must provide some sort of private consultation and ruling of the legitimacy of hardware or tactics a sailor may use in a race.
5 - If a protest arises, a protest hearing must be immediately held right after the race, and the protest committee is made up of the sailors who sailed in the race. The sailors will hear the protest, and vote on the resolution as they understood the rules when the race was started (not as explained after the race).
6 - If for some reason the organizer who acquired the rights to host the next world championship can't / doesn't want to host the race, they may transfer the rights to whomever they want.
Same Day Different Place World Championship
For all of us that can't make it to the World Championship Race, this SDDP race for you ! Basically we all go sailing in our own home waters during the same time window. We then send in our results of how fast we went over the distance and the person with the fastest time wins.
Rules:
1 - Boat must be setup in class legal configuration.
2 - Each person will sail 5 miles in water and report the time it took to cover that 5 miles.
3 - Distance measured by Point to point, not elapsed distance by GPS.
4 - Can sail more than required distance, and use the averaged time / speed for best set of continuous sequential points.
5 - Must change direction so 50% of distance travelled was in opposite directions. And by opposite, we mean atleast 60 degree difference from previous direction was travelling.
6 - Wind blown only
7 - Must be sailed in an area where tidal flows & currents will not affect the speed.
8 - Race Window is 3 calendar days, the middle day is the same date as the official PDRacer World Championship race.
NOTE: Since we have a 3 day window, and results are reported by the person, multiple people can use the same boat at different times, and each of them would be independent competitors for the SDDP world championship.
9 - Results must me emailed to the PDRacer yahoo discussion group by midnight the day after, the last day of window.
Results to post at the discussion group:
Your name
Your Home Port (city you live in)
Hull number of Boat you used
Body of water you sailed in
Location of that body of water (nearest big city, state, country etc)
Date and time your 5 miles was completed
Time to cover your 5 miles as per these rules
Total sailing miles covered while competing in this race (possibly over multiple days)
Please upload atleast 1 picture to the photo section of the discussion group
preferences of trophies, in order you would want them
Comments to be displayed on results page
Trophies
Everyone must upload one or more drawings, that were created by them, of a trophy to a folder in the photos section of the PDRacer Yahoo group - the folder is named "2008 SDDP Trophies"). The first place winner gets their first pic of trophy, then 2nd place gets theirs etc. You print out the trophy picture, and then that is the trophy you get. It would be great if someone could photoshop combine the trophy picture with a picture of the skipper and their boat, and indicate on the picture what place they got.
